Your Life Philosophy: Is Your Glass Half Empty, Half Full or Something Else?
If you search for inspiration on a daily basis, this article may provide you with a gold nugget of inspiration.
I'm sure you have heard the question, "Is your glass half empty or half full?" How you answer supposedly determines if you're a pessimist or an optimist. See the glass half empty and of course, you're a pessimist. See the glass half full and you're an optimist.
Maybe you have a copy of the Optimist Creed on your wall or in your wallet and you say it religiously each day. Or maybe your motivation for staying positive comes from your spiritual foundation or from the positive people around you. Sometimes, though, a little inspiring thought or word from a friend can be a strong motivating force in your life.
Mentors are always inspiring to me. Here is an example of how my mentor, Bill Cooper, a retired police chief changed my view of life by sharing his take on the glass half empty or half full concept. But before I tell you about his philosophy on it, you have to know a little bit about him. By far, he's the most observant person I have ever met and one of the best judges of character as well. Within 20 seconds, he can tell you many character traits about anyone he observes, and his judgments have always been correct.
One day as Bill Cooper and I were discussing a problem at work, he told me his glass half empty, glass half full philosophy.
"I've determined that there aren't two types of people, but three," he said. "
This, of course, peaked my curiosity. Who could be the other type of person? I searched my mind for an answer but found nothing.
"There are those who see the glass half empty." he said. "There are those who see the glass half full. And the third type, the ones that are very rare to find, are the ones who don't see the glass because they're looking for the water faucet."
It made sense. Of the three types of people, which one are you?
