Snapping Out of Depression Sometimes Is Easier Than You Think. Part 1.
Ever notice that most of the articles written on depression are actually depressing? Aren't you sick and tired of being bored with medical mumbo jumbo while you're trying to get the facts? Why do the authors have to make the facts so serious?
Well, this article is different. And because it is, it just might make you angry. or it hopefully will make you smile and think twice about depression. If you get angry, don't take it out on me! And don't take it out on yourself, like most depressed people do! Instead, use one of the ways to snap out of depression that are mentioned in this article.
Everyone knows the signs of depression but no one seems to focus on what to do to get out of it. The simplest way to snap out of depression is to start having fun! Make a conscious decision to do so and your life will change. This is a simple remedy for depression.
Trick Yourself Out of Depression
Can't get out of bed in the morning? Trick yourself into doing something different and unexpected. You could ask your roommate to set your clock ahead or back so you don't know what time it really is. The key is that you don't know what day your roommate will do this. What this does is it sets your mind in a quandary as soon as you arise. Well what time is it? I could be late, you think. So what do you do?
You hop out of bed faster than you have for months. Warning: Make sure your roommate sets all the clocks in the house to the same time, so you don't cheat and get back in bed!
You could also set a timer to blast loud music for your alarm clock. Or ask a non-depressed friend to set up strobe lights to go off to get you out of bed. Those are so annoying that you'll spend NO extra time in bed!
Practical Jokes Can Help
Next, it's time for you to play some practical jokes on your roommate (to get back at you for the clocks). Make yourself a six egg omelette with vegetables in it for breakfast. Now you won't be eating it all, so don't worry. No need to promote depression about weight gain! Put half in the refrigerator for tomorrow and you'll wake up to another nice breakfast.
When you make the eggs, crack them very carefully so you can put the empty shell back in the egg carton. Make them look like you didn't use them. Then when your roommate comes into the kitchen, smack your lips and tell him or her what a great time you are having in taste heaven with your omelette; she should make herself one. Make sure you have your digital camera with a zoom lens ready to snap her photo when she discovers the eggs are empty egg shells! Choose happiness.
Okay, it's time for work. Wear something odd today, like two socks that don't match or two shoes that don't match and find out who notices. Who talks behind your back about it? Who starts laughing with you? Of course, you'll be laughing at yourself when they discover it. Try to hamm it up and act like your favorite actor or actress. You might even try acting like several different actors or actresses for a little variety.
Snap Out of Misery
Snapping out of depression is really a matter of snapping out of your present state of being. It's about snapping out of the state of who you are, because the person that you are at the present is a very sad person, and you really don't want to be that person anymore. So to do that, you have to change your behaviors to reflect a different type of person - one who's happy. The happier you make your new self, the more you will be able to pull it off successfully. A happy person is an observant person, always noticing what others are doing and commenting or countering them.
Now when you were waiting for your roommate to find those eggshells, did you spend any time thinking about how sad you were? No! Your mind was focused, you were clear, you were anticipating what was to come. You were clearly in the present! Those are the moments you want to remember! You'll remember them the next time you are sad.
Remember what it felt like to laugh with your co-workers, with your roommate, with the people on the subway, whoever you came into contact with. By remembering them, you will be able to snap out of depression the next time and the next time after that. The more you repeat this, the more you are training yourself to NOT be depressed. You teach yourself to choose happiness.
Depression is a state of mind. You must jar yourself out of that state if you want to get over it and eventually stop taking medications for depression. It's a simple remedy for depression, and one I have noticed in my patients who should have clinical depression because of low levels of certain minerals in their body, but they don't. They have trained themselves not to be depressed.
So get to it! Look for some harmless fun to have with others and remember if you're poking fun at yourself, other people can never be mad at you!
