Want to know more about natural healing remedies? Curious about why cranberry juice is helpful in relieving bladder infections or UTI? If so, this article is for you.
Anyone who has ever had a bladder infection or urinary tract infection (UTI) knows that the pain and discomfort can be unbearable. If bladder infections aren't taken care of, they can have very serious consequences such as scarring the urethral tube or leading to serious kidney infections that require hospitalization.
Bladder infections and UTI are also called honeymoon cystitis, because women are susceptible to develop them after frequent intercourse during their honeymoon.
Bladder infections can involve more than just the bladder, though and sometimes the kidneys, ureters, and the urethra are affected. Honeymoon cystitis is actually quite common in women. Even if a woman is not on her honeymoon, she can develop recurrent bladder infections caused by sexual intercourse with a new partner, not emptying bladder when the need arises, excess sugar consumption, riding a bike for long distances, and not drinking enough water.
With the national trend towards alternative medicine and people wanting to treat themselves and be treated naturally, it is common for women to seek out natural solutions and natural remedies for bladder infections and UTI. There are quite a few natural bladder infection remedies available to prevent and treat the discomfort, but if symptoms are extreme, antibiotics may be your best option to eliminate the infection as quickly as possible. However, what I have seen from years of experience as an herbalist is that the right herbs in the right doses can easily eliminate a bladder infection in half the time it takes the average person to use up their antibiotics.

Bladder Infection Symptoms
The most common symptoms of a bladder infection are the following:
- frequent urge to urinate
- passing only small quantities of urine
- burning sensations while urinating
- painful urination
- cloudy, milky or red urine
- pain or pressure in the abdomen or lower back
If fever, nausea, vomiting, or chills are present, the infection has most likely spread to the kidneys, which requires immediate treatment with antibiotics to prevent any damage from occurring in the ureters and kidneys.
Why Cranberry Juice as a Natural Remedy for Bladder Infection?
I'm sure you have heard the recommendations to drink plenty of water and cranberry juice when you have a UTI. The reason for this is that the water flushes the bladder of the infectious organism causing the infection. Cranberry juice prevents the bacteria from adhering to the walls of the bladder where they will reproduce.
There are other foods and herbs in the world of natural remedies that act similarly. Since the effective ingredient in cranberry juice that works against the bladder infection is the sugar mannose, any other juices high in this sugar will have the same effect. Pineapple juice is also high in mannose and thus, it can also be used in the event of a UTI.
You will find a lot of good comprehensive information on the symptoms and treatment of UTIs and natural bladder infection remedies available online. According to numerous internet sources, using the cranberry is the most common method to treat mild natural bladder infection of the natural remedies, but there are also various homeopathic treatments that are specific for certain symptoms.
For instance, if extreme bladder pain and blood in the urine is present, Cantharis (Spanish Fly) is sometimes recommended. Sources also state that relief with homeopathic bladder infection remedies should occur within twelve hours, and again, if symptoms are severe, seek medical attention immediately. An acute urinary tract infection is nothing to mess around with.
The herb sarsaparilla is recommended for burning pain in the urethra at the end of urination and Berberis aquifolium (Oregon grape) for right sided kidney pain. Other natural remedies include goldenseal, marshmallow root, buchu, corn silk, horsetail, and the little heard of herb, uva ursi. Goldenseal is always an herb of choice since it acts as a broad spectrum antibiotic. Although pretty bitter, the effectiveness of goldenseal is pretty high at killing the microbes that cause many infections including bladder infections.
Fast Relief for UTI
The quickest relief I have ever found for any infection, though, has been by using a combination of herbs that includes American herbs, European herbs, and Amazon herbs. Within the first 6 hours, I've noticed distinct relief in my patients. Continuing the patients on the herbal combination for four additional days helps insure that the infection won't return.
It is a good idea to always have on hand a few different natural remedies for bladder infections. If the UTI has progressed past the mild state, using cranberry juice by itself will not be strong enough to wipe out the infection. I recommend three items to have on hand at all times: cranberry juice, goldenseal, and the combination of herbs that wipes out infection in record time. This way you can always win over any infection and put honeymoon cystitis in the past!
